Woman hating andrea dworkin5/23/2023 Her mind matured in the crucible of the 1960s anti-war movement, intimate partner violence and an intensive study of violent pornography.ĭworkin’s ideas about justice were crystalline and urgent. Instead, her intellect was formed by her struggle to come to terms with the most personal forms of violence: a family member’s memory of the Holocaust and her early sexual abuse by a stranger in a movie theatre. My guess is that part of what made her such an extraordinary writer is that Andrea Dworkin did not go to graduate school. On the contrary, Dworkin’s theories of sexuality were extraordinarily complex ideas distilled to their essence and articulated so clearly that anyone of any level of education could understand them. Dworkin’s critics often characterized her theories of sex and gender as reductive or essentialist: rarely did they engage them. I have always believed that part of the hostility that Dworkin aroused had something to do with a clarity of mind that terrified people who cannot bear difficult and dangerous thoughts.

Ball four baseball book5/22/2023 The book goes into detail about Bouton’s salary disputes with the New York Yankees in a time where there were no baseball agents and players had to negotiate for the best contract they could wheedle out of management. He writes about the shenanigans baseball players indulge in during a baseball season. It is written in diary form and gives Jim Bouton’s views on his dealings with general managers, managers and other players. It is one of the fastest reads I have read. I read Ball Four the first time in the 1970’s before reading it again almost forty years later last week. Jim Bouton wrote Ball Four during the 1969 Commonwealth ann patchett synopsis5/22/2023 “The candy bars were starting to melt and the gun was hot from being out in the sun and they put them all together back in the bag.”Īs a reader, I fell fully under the spell of this chapter, and I’m also pretty sure I misinterpreted it. Patchett wisely underplays the drama - the chapter is a masterly example of showing rather than telling - and the increasingly shocking details speak for themselves. Thus the children eat breakfast at a diner, then gather supplies, including soda, candy bars, a gun and a fifth of gin, and hike to the lake, where they spend several hours swimming and leaping from a high rock. Their blended family is on a car trip, staying in a motel near a lake, and the parents - the beautiful, overwhelmed mother of two of the girls and the affably selfish father of two more girls and two boys - have left a note that reads We’re sleeping late. In the most vivid chapter of Ann Patchett’s rich and engrossing new novel, “Commonwealth,” it is 1971 and six stepsiblings ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old have been left to their own devices. Saint joan of arc mark twain5/22/2023 Indeed, Sieur Louis’s narration continually reminds the reader that he was there to see things with his ownĮyes. Finally, he even gives Sieur Louis a front row seat as a scribe during her trial and condemnation in an ecclesiastical court controlled by the English.Īt these key periods makes him the perfect person to describe the “real” Joan. He appoints Sieur Louis to the position of page and secretary when Joan assumes military command of the French army. For example, Twain places Sieur Louis off in the shadows during one of Joan’s heavenly visions. His unique relationship with Joan allows him to narrate the story from the perspective of an eyewitness. The fictitious character of Sieur Louis de Conte is Joan’s lifelong friend and confidante. Primarily through his narrator, Sieur Louis de Conte, and two other characters.Įach represent distinct historical renderings who Joan was. As a storyteller first and historian second, he plays with fact and fiction in all sorts of ways to entertain the reader and guide him through an investigation into the Truth of Joan’s life, something my class calls construction of memoir. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, hereafter Mark Twain, tells a captivating, historically accurate version of Joan of Arc’s life in his Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich5/21/2023 In short, if you want something fun and light-hearted to read, give the Stephanie Plum books a listen.
